Back in 1998 and at the fruitful age of 16, I boarded a train bound for the Commando Training Centre, Royal Marines. From this day forward, a very scared looking but enthusiastic “child” blossomed into a skins wearing athlete with a desire to constantly improve physical fitness and human performance. Over the next 7 years I endured countless thrashings (corrective PT) that would make my eyes bleed but teach me never to “forget my flip flops in the showers” ever again!!!
Upon leaving the Marines I worked on a close protection team based in the Middle East for 2 years. During which time, I researched and studied exercise physiology and various strength training methods. None of which delivered the same response as I had become accustomed to.
After careful planning and a lot of nervous sweating, I managed to negotiate my way back to the UK where I immediately jetted back off to Spain in order to qualify as a Personal Trainer. On completion of this qualification (2008) I searched the Internet for various courses in order to develop myself into a confident and knowledgeable Coach. Kettlebells and Olympic weightlifting became my next ventures, which inadvertently led me to CrossFit.com.
I began to dabble in the mystical WODs that relentlessly appeared online and soon felt the warm drops of blood on my cheeks once again! This was it!!! My next course of action was to completely embarrass myself attempting “Fran” on my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer certification in CrossFit San Diego, which I failed to complete in the allotted time frame.
Since this day I have yet to find an avenue of fitness which offers an equal response. I am the fittest I have ever been and have been encircled in the most genuinely likeable community that I have ever known.
I have had the absolute pleasure of competing in CrossFit internationally and have been cheered on (shouted at) by total strangers and fellow competitors at every venue, made unbreakable bonds through the pain of a workout and shared multiple “posh” coffees at every corner of the UK CrossFit community.
In 2010 I placed 5th in the UK and Ireland CrossFit Games Sectionals and 15th in the European Regionals as well as placing highly in various British and European events.

In June of 2009 I weighed 130kg and knew I needed to make a life altering change. I’d had knee reconstructive surgery at the end of 2007 and quickly began piling the weight on. Up until that point I had been fit and active, regularly playing sports like squash, football and strength training.
Doing a search on the internet for HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) I stumbled across crossfit.com and the workouts there looked impossible! The thought of doing 10 pull ups, let alone 100 was impossible to comprehend. Nevertheless I started training using CrossFit, massively scaling the workouts to my fitness level and to the equipment I had in my Garage Gym. I also cleaned up my diet initially following the Zone diet and gradually converting to Paleo.
By the following June I weighed 93kg and was the fittest I had been in my adult life…up until that point! CrossFit changes lives. I am testament to that!
What I love about CrossFit is that ALL the workouts are scalable to the relative ability of each individual but the key to success lies in the intensity.
