Mechanics, Consistency and finally Intensity. CrossFit’s charter, taught from the very beginning of the program is often confused. Both by the athlete and the outsider, looking in. A very cool 2-part write up on the subject is linked below and is well worth the couple of minutes it will take to read…

Part one

Part two

New week, new DOMs creating workouts, and we are beginning with a hero. The first workout I did this year, on January 1st…a shoulder BBQ.

The other night, while running during the 5:30pm class, there was still daylight visible! You know what that is don’t you...morale! The dark and cold winter is nearly at an end! Storm Denis has buggered right off and left in its wake…pure goodness! Only matched by the feeling something hot and wet can bring when cold and tired, the morning’s degrees will soon be in double figures and shorts will be the only clothing option placed on the chair ready for tomorrow!

Good times!

WoD - Thursday 20th February, 2020

WoD - Thursday 20th February, 2020

Shortly before 1215 hrs local time, of this day in the year 2008, Corporal Damian Mulvihill was taking part in a joint ISAF - ANA patrol engaged in operations near Sangin. The marines of Alpha Company, 40 Commando, were conducting a clearance patrol to deter Taliban intimidation of local Afghans. It was during this action that an Improvised Explosive Device was detonated, sadly killing Corporal Mulvihill instantly. He died leading his section and the Company from the front. Corporal Damian ‘Dee’ Mulvihill was born on 5 June 1975 and was from Plymouth. He joined the Royal Marines on 20 September 1998 and completed Commando training despite contracting septicaemia towards the end. After passing out of recruit training, ‘Dee’ joined 42 Commando Royal Marines where he took part in numerous deployments around the world as well as taking part in Operation Palliser and Operation Silkman in Sierra Leone and Operation Banner in Northern Ireland.

During his time at 42 Commando he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He then joined Air Defence Troop in 2002 and completed his specialist training before being promoted to Corporal in December 2003. On completion of his service with the United Kingdom Landing Force Command Support Group, based at Stonehouse Barracks in his home town of Plymouth, he joined Alpha Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines in April 2006.

‘Dee’ was a giant of a man who impressed all who met him. Ever cheerful, he would never allow problems to get him down. He always had a friendly word for anyone he met and his fantastic personality filled any room he walked into. He was an excellent listener and would always make time for others.

‘Dee’ loved his boxing and rugby and represented the Royal Marines at rugby union. He was also a keen water polo player and represented the Royal Navy and the Combined Services team at the sport. ‘Dee’ was a true character who will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to serve with him. Humorous, caring and a true friend, he will be sadly missed by all his comrades in 40 Commando, Royal Marines, and the wider Corps family.

‘Dee’ leaves behind a loving fiancee and family of whom he talked about to anybody and everybody. He and his fiancee Lisa were planning to marry in the near future, and our deepest sympathies are extended to Lisa, his parents and all family and friends.

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Birrell Royal Marines, Commanding Officer of 40 Commando Royal Marines, said:

"The loss of Corporal Mulvihill is a devastating blow for his family, his friends and his unit. An outstanding junior leader, he was immensely popular in both his company and the wider Commando unit. A charismatic man, he possessed an irrepressible sense of humour and would always be found with a broad smile on his face, regardless of the challenges or difficulties that he was facing.

As a marine, he epitomised the Commando spirit. Courageous and selfless, his cheerfulness in adversity could be guaranteed, he always demonstrated the very highest standards of professional competence in everything that he undertook."

Another year goes by yet we will never forget. To this day, servicemen and women are in harms way. Putting themselves in significant danger, fighting for what they believe in and sometimes what they don't. They are there for each other, and we are here for them.
We perform this workout as a mark of respect for Dee, but also to celebrate the lives of many others who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, defending their countries and the world.

WoD - Friday 14th February, 20120

WoD - Friday 14th February, 20120

In doing these hero workouts, I am exposing myself to things that I haven’t done in a long arsed time, running 10 miles as a part of a workout for example (I have actually never done that), something that 15 years ago I could’ve happily done before breakfast. Genuinely without feeling anything the next day.
That might be seen to some as a negative. I’m sure the 15 year difference hasn’t helped, yet what is more likely is that these days I am not a specialist. Which, is a big bonus.
Running, pull ups, press ups, carrying heavy shit a long way was my bread and butter. Being held in high regard as being “fit”, so much fitness was outside of my comfort zone! That is the beauty of CrossFit.

The smartest of the British Military know that, and, have embraced it. Likely propelling some seriously strong willed men and women into seriously tough folk!

Either all of that, or my Rhabdo has taken hold of me and these are my last dying words! Apart from…

Wednesday, ah that wonderful hump day! When you know that you are officially on the downhill slope to the weekend and you can wake up feeling the full force of Monday’s workout! Fuck you DOMS...fuck you!

Now the ladies among you, you maybe temporarily confused and consumed by the pain you feel corsing through your veins, but that does not mean that (even if it is socially acceptable) it is okay to drop to one knee on February and ask your “man” to be your husband!
Don’t worry lads, the plan is to utterly destroy them all with such disgusting programming that there is no way they could:
1. Chase after you once you ask them WTF they think they are doing and…
2. Could actually get down to one knee anyway.

Maybe I was experiencing hallucinating due to my sleep deprived state, but at 05:05 I’m sure listened to a woman complaining to the hotel receptionist that it was impossible to get a coffee, specifically with milk, at that time of the morning!

Stood there in her PJs and slippers (who brings that to a hotel?), she chewed the poor dudes ear off for at least 7 minutes, visibly upset about the situation! I felt her pain, I’d have given my new ball trimmer to go back to bed with a milky hot cup of morale!

Had I’d known what awaited me at each airport along the way, I may well have asked if she’d wanted some company!

Well that went fast! Tomorrow marks the 9th year of CrossFit Cardiff in operation. On Saturday the 5th of February, without a sign (stayed that way for at least 3 years) the doors to a unit that would literally change peoples lives opened.
It is genuinely difficult to write about all that has happened over the course of nearly a decade, but, many folk have gotten really fit, cured their selves of conditions and ailments, saved relationships…created relationships. Experienced extreme discomfort, through workouts and hang overs! My punctuation has gotten a little better (you can teach a Marine anything see…😳) and I can change a toilet roll or the batteries of a concept two monitor in world record time! Thank you all for helping me to grow!

Roll on Saturday the 15th where we will celebrate in style.

Today’s workout was a challenge, and tomorrow’s is no different. It is one where you will have to really focus on technique, as just trying to go quickly will cause a lots of pain though a large bite on the arse!

The main concern, is timing. Concentrate on using the legs to the work, delaying the pull of the arms until the very last second so that you can hopefully go unbroken on the pull up bar. Cumulative fatigue (otherwise known as a sweet pump) is gonna get ya, be smart…

You would’ve thought after doing CrossFit for so long I’d have learnt about timings of workouts, estimates of how long they are likely to take so that folk finish with enough time to get cooled down and packed away in time.
Apologies to the 06:30 class yesterday, I buggered that one up! We all make mistakes hey. Maybe it was just that I thought so highly of you that I assumed that by 12mins you would all be sat around, school story time like, chilling and drinking coffee… reflecting on just how fit you are!
I still think it would’ve happened had it not been for the unfortunate incident experienced with Josie’s bobble hat!
