“In gymnastics, completing a routine without error will not get you a perfect score, the 10.0—only a 9.7. To get the last three tenths of a point, you must demonstrate “risk, originality, and virtuosity” as well as make no mistakes in execution of the routine.”

“Risk is simply executing a movement that is likely to be missed or botched; originality is a movement or combination of movements unique to the athlete—a move or sequence not seen before. Understandably, novice gymnasts love to demonstrate risk and originality, for both are dramatic, fun, and awe inspiring— especially among the athletes themselves, although audiences are less likely to be aware when either is demonstrated.”

“Virtuosity, though, is a different beast altogether. Virtuosity is defined in gymnastics as “performing the common uncommonly well.” Unlike risk and originality, virtuosity is elusive, supremely elusive. It is, however, readily recognized by audience as well as coach and athlete. But more importantly, more to my point, virtuosity is more than the requirement for that last tenth of a point; it is always the mark of true mastery (and of genius and beauty).”

“There is a compelling tendency among novices developing any skill or art, whether learning to play the violin, write poetry, or compete in gymnastics, to quickly move past the fundamentals and on to more elaborate, more sophisticated movements, skills, or techniques. “I understand how this occurs. It is natural to want to teach people advanced and fancy movements. The urge to quickly move away from the basics and toward advanced movements arises out of the natural desire to entertain your client and impress him with your skills and knowledge. But make no mistake: it is a sucker’s move. Teaching a snatch where there is not yet an overhead squat, teaching an overhead squat where there is not yet an air squat, is a colossal mistake. This rush to advancement increases the chance of injury, delays advancement and progress, and blunts the client’s rate of return on his efforts. In short, it retards his fitness.”

“If you insist on basics, really insist on them, your clients will immediately recognize that you are a master trainer. They will not be bored; they will be awed. I promise this. They will quickly come to recognize the potency of fundamentals. They will also advance in every measurable way past those not blessed to have a teacher so grounded and committed to basics.”

What I can tell you, is that I have been utterly bombarded with seriously cool messages and tags, full of nothing but compliments for Al Conroy (AKA The General) who, has apparently missed his calling! There is still time however, he could easily go forward and re-focus his life to become a highly respected Military Leader. And, although our national security would be much improved, we would lose him to Her Majesty…FUCK THAT!

Take a bow Conners, you have led your team with virtuosity and integrity; I’m sure they will follow you anywhere. I hope you are reading this, while sat on the sofa (feet up and worthy smug smile on your face), drinking an ice cold alcoholic beverage of your choice! Just deserved.

You’d have thought that you lot would have learnt by now, the old saying, you know…don’t judge a book by it’s cover!
Luckily for me though, nothing fills me with quite as much joy as watching legends like The G-Man walk into the 6:30am class (well at 6:38, “quietly”) laid back and smoking a cigar as he has read the workout the night before and clearly is about to “crush” it!

The only problem is that when you attempt to do double unders after a 20 Calorie assault bike sprint, you can’t! And, you get this stupid look on your face when realisation sets in…you’ve done it again haven’t you. You have allowed yourself to be lulled into a false sense of security and as round one draws to a close, you understand…this time you truly have f**ked it up! But, it won’t be long before you do it again!

Monday is here, I hope you guys had epic weekends filled with glute punishing lunges and step ups, and shoulder sculpting overhead lunges and handstand push ups, coupled with creating hilarious characters in an amazing arts and crafts session. Definitely not drinking and debauchery…man we CrossFitters are cool hey?! ;-)

Now then, please, if you haven’t done 19.3 yet, you must respect that the world still goes around, and our classes still continue. If you happen to find yourself with the top 100 in the world, I will honour repeats, otherwise…you are a complete muppet and should really just focus on the program and going as hard as hell. Suicide, vomit inducing pace for the win.

Now come on ladies, you need to keep up with the gents here. At a CrossFit Games Open sign up of 24 so far, only 6 of you are lovely females. Now the very last thing that we want this to be is a ginormous sausagefest, pleeeeease!

Sign up to the Open you rat bags, come on…I know it’s only because your scared! But there is really no need to be, us men will go easy on you. You know, let you win a workout or two.
Lads, you have to be with me on this, otherwise they won’t sign up. You can’t just thrash the ladies in every workout - let them have at least one.

I wonder if at this point my email go crazy with female membership cancellations or, the reverse psychology works and our open sign ups go through the roof?!

Anyway, are we closer to figuring out the week’s structure yet…no…I don’t blame you, there isn’t one!

Welcome to a new and shiny week, fresh from an amazing turn out for the Badassed Mumma WoD. You guys should now have an understanding of one of the difficulties that our kick ass ladies go through when CrossFitting while pregnant. Not easy hey! And only one of the changes their body goes through - they really are badasses!!

To tomorrow. With the open upon us we are going to get you used to the style of the workouts. And done so with the added bonus of having a representative from HQ, at the gym filming you all in your best possible situations: sweating, breathing heavy, shaky, wishing you were really cwtched up on the sofa, rather than having a camera in your face. Luckily for you, it’s Grizz - and he is super professional and a proper dude!!

Right then you competitive buggers, a few of you have been asking about the 2019 CrossFit Games Open: what we are planning to do and how it will run, all that stuff. Clearly I am more than happy to judge those bad asses of you who have your eyes pinned on the big dog, Mat Fraser…he’d better watch out. Now that the Met Con class is up and running, Joey has been training 14 times a day!
I say training, it kind resembles such, apart from yesterday where all I could detect was a barbell slapping him about the face as if he owed it money! 😉

Anyway, here is some info:
The open is upon us and registration is live…sign your arses up! It costs $20 and you can do so by clicking here

What you get...the opportunity to be the world's fittest! The mere mortals amongst us, just get to have a ridiculous amount of fun for five consecutive weeks! This year, the workouts will be done on Saturday's, so that: the Friday morning class/coach doesn't suffer having to run the workout with little to no prep (even though there is no way that Ash will be going to bed prior to the announcements); there is more time for fun and frolics (most of you can spare a little longer for such activities on a Saturday); and if I decide to program the exact same movements on Thursday (history proves that I am extremely good at this), then you have a day of rest before attacking it. 

It all makes perfect sense. 

In order to keep up the camaraderie and good times throughout, mini "teams" will be allocated from those who have signed up to battle it out in as many inventive and ridiculous ways as creativity will allow; atop of the already assigned WoDs. 

A week prior to the first Open WoD, 19.1, teams will be drawn out of the hat, affording you ample time to discuss team game plans with your Team Captain's (appointment method TBC) as well as set up the essential - and not at all annoying - what’s app/facebook messenger groups, as well as the coach assigned to control the squabbling. 😉

Each team will have two coaches assigned. Set to lead by example by undertaking each workout head to head, no shirt, no chalk, and wearing a £7 pair of pumps bought from the local Tesco Extra; just like the good old days, old fashion stare down! 😉

For the entire open, teams will acquire points for workout wins, for participation, for those deemed to have gone above and beyond for their fellow athletes (whether they are on their team or someone else's), as well as performing weekly tasks.

Throughout the open, members will also gain points for each friend (one per person) who attends each "Saturday morning lights" event. These friends should not have done CrossFit before but be up for a kicking (😉) and more importantly a laugh. The ability to count double unders will also be appreciated. 

Look out for further details to be announced, but for now…get registering, be sure to request to be added to the Reebok CrossFit Cardiff Team roster, and let the games begin…

This coming weekend sees the gym closed for a kick ass CrossFit L1 Seminar and so there will be no classes on Saturday, nor open gym on Sunday.
However, the gym will be open for a Team WoD on Sunday evening at 18:00 (6pm to the uninitiated) The class will be an hour, allowing you to get home in time for your Sunday evening influx of Sir Attenborough.

So you don’t only have Suller to thank for this workout. But, Pat Sherwood and CrossFit Linchpin. Originally programmed for the 2017 CrossFit Games, for the teenage and masters categories, we have decided to scale it due to the freaks performing there are waaaaaaay fitter than we are.
In order to preserve the intended stimulus of the workout, we have had to reduce the load to one far lighter than the 16 year olds used! Holy shit!! How good does that make you feel?!

Now even though this abuse will officially stem from last week’s “assault,” I can’t really see how tonight will be (I am writing this pre, yet you are reading it post) any different at all.

My prediction will be that Nick may well gain a significant amount of burpees in round one, and possibly not actually be able to complete rounds four or five.
I even took the liberty, last week, of taking a couple of pictures of Nick, post workout. Which, has really all I need for any class involving those amazing machines.

Nick, please comment below and tell me that I was wrong…I can tell the future!

If I haven’t confused the living hell out of you then I will be mighty impressed. Back to the present…
